The Virgina Lakes Yurt is a 24’ insulated structure built by Pacific Yurt Company. Instead of a traditional stone and wood hut, we chose a yurt, which leaves virtually no footprint on the land.

The Virginia Lakes Yurt is located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada within the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest, just below Dunderberg Peak. We are on the south end of Kavanaugh Ridge, north of Virginia Lakes and south of Green Creek, between the Hoover Wilderness and Bodie. Located 120 miles south of Reno and 41 miles north of Mammoth Lakes, Dunderberg Peak offers world class skiing with unparalleled views from 12,374 feet. The Yurt is located at: 38 03’29”N, 119 14’37”W approximately 5 miles from Hwy 395 and the seasonal road closure.

Our yurt is a modern adaptation of the ancient shelter used by Central Asian nomads for centuries. The compact shape of the yurt and combination of lightweight members in tension and compression mean that the structure is highly efficient in maximizing strength while minimizing the use of materials. The yurt was positioned and located with safety and ease of access in mind. Its location is protected from the Sierra storms but is also sunny, with majestic Sierra views.

The yurt is equipped with a toilet system, pellet fuel stove, Goal Zero Power, 8 bunk beds with pads, a large family-style table, and a propane dual burner cook stove. The kitchen is stocked with a few basics like a pot for melting snow, washtubs, and a few pots and pans. The toilet is conveniently located close to the Yurt and protected from the elements.

The yurt is a “dry camp.” All visitors will be expected to be self-contained hauling water in or melting snow.
